The URZ offers all employees, PhD candidates and students various services to support digital teaching and collaboration.

The following list provides an overview of the IT tools and resources made available through the URZ which can be used to collaborate digitally with colleagues working from home or with students.

For digital teaching, we recommend using our services, which are operated on our own servers and are data protection compliant. In addition to Moodle, these include the conferencing and video management services heiCONF and heiCAST as well as the instant messaging service heiCHAT.

The University's cloud storage service enables you to share and collaboratively edit files and folders. This service has also been recently made available to students.

heiCHAT Instant Messaging

The new university instant messaging service can be used to chat and make (video) calls. Secure, simple, encrypted and data protection compliant.

heiCONF

🏠🎓

heiCONF is a web conferencing system based on BigBlueButton that can be used for audio and video conferencing. What is special about this service is that it is hosted and operated by Heidelberg University which means that all data remains on the University servers. heiCONF is designed for interactive conferences with up to 50 participants.

heiCONF-Audimax

heiCONF-Audimax is a version of the web conferencing system heiCONF that has been specially optimized for lectures as well as other presentation and class formats. In heiCONF-Audimax, the camera function is only enabled for the presenter. With this system, it is possible to hold conferences with up to 200 participants. The maximum number of participants will also be increased in the near future.

Moodle Platform

Moodle offers the ability to set up virtual classrooms to support courses at the University. Tools such as self-tests, discussion boards, wikis and glossaries can be used. Additionally, video streaming on Moodle is possible due to its connection to the high-performance video management system heiCAST. Teaching videos can be created, for example, with the software Camtasia which can be ordered from the URZ at a greatly reduced price.

Moodle Platform for Examinations

For digital written examinations, the Moodle version specially created for this purpose should be used. This separate Moodle platform can be adapted to the needs of digital examinations and offers the ability to conduct various exam scenarios in an environment that is as stable and secure as possible due to its high performance and independence from the existing teaching platform.

heiCAST

heiCAST is a service for comprehensive management of digital video content and video streaming at Heidelberg University. It is primarily used to provide audiovisual learning content in Moodle. Teaching videos can be created, for example, with the software Camtasia which can be ordered from the URZ at a greatly reduced price.

With Webex, employees can hold video conferences, online meetings as well as online training sessions.

Microsoft Teams is a platform that combines chat, audio and video calling, file sharing, notepad and whiteboard functionalities.

With the DFNconf service from the DFN-Verein, employees can hold video conferences and stream events. Note: Due to current circumstances, the service is under high-demand; this may result in a loss in quality.

With a VPN, you can access services that are only available on the University network and safeguard communication with your remote workstation.
