How-To Configure settings in YoKI
The following instructions summarize all the settings you can configure in YoKi. These settings include, in particular, settings for the chat interface and for voice input and output.
Note: This guide provides an overview of the settings options and does not go much into detail. Only selected settings options that may be of particular interest are explained.

Access settings
1. Open YoKI in your web browser and log in.
2. Click on your profile in the bottom left corner of the start screen.

3. Select the “Settings” option from the menu.

All settings options at a glance
Below you will find a brief explanation of all settings windows in YoKI. Selected windows and settings options are presented in more detail in the following chapters. In general, the default settings are already adapted to the usage behavior of an average user.
- General: In the general settings, you can control the appearance of the AI platform. For example, you can set the language of the user interface or the theme (light/dark).
- Chat: In the chat settings, you will find all the settings options relating to the appearance of individual chats. Here, you can change the font size and chat direction, for example.
- Commands: In the command settings, you can enable or disable shortcuts. These include, for example, a shortcut that allows you to switch between models more quickly.
- Speech: In the speech settings, you can configure the behavior of the “text-to-speech” and “speech-to-text”. These are relevant for the accessible use of YoKI.
- Personalization: In the personalization settings, you can enable or disable reminders you have created. Reminders are not currently supported. This window should be ignored.
- Data controls: In the data control settings, you can configure advanced data control settings and, for example, delete all chats. This window can be ignored for normal use of YoKI.
- Account: In the account settings, you can add a profile picture for your account, customize your display name, and delete your account. (Note: Deleting your account will result in all your chats, bookmarks, preferences, etc. being deleted. You will also have to agree to the terms of use again the next time you log in. For more information on deleting your account, see the guide “Log in and log out in YoKI”.)

Settings: General
In the general settings, you can control the appearance of the AI platform. These include, for example:
- “Language”: The models can respond in multiple languages (regardless of the language set in the settings). However, you can further optimize your YoKI experience by selecting your language for the entire YoKI interface. You can choose not only German and English, but also Danish, Turkish, Persian, and more.
- “Theme”: You can choose whether the YoKI theme should be light or dark.
- “Auto-Scroll to latest message on chat open”: If this option is enabled, YoKI will jump directly to the latest message in the chat. If this option is disabled, you will need to scroll all the way down to see the latest message when opening a chat, or you can press the “Scroll to the end” button (see below).
- “Archived chats”: This option allows you to manage all archived chats and retrieve them from the archive. You can archive chats by clicking on the three dots next to a chat name > “Archive.”
Settings: Chat
In the chat settings, you will find all the settings options relating to the appearance of individual chats. These include, for example:
- “Message Font Size”: You can adjust the font size of chats in various increments. This setting does not apply to the YoKI interface itself.
- “Chat direction”: By default, chat messages are displayed from left to right. You can reverse this behavior by changing this option.
- “Maximize Chat space”: When this option is enabled, the chat window is larger and extends across almost the entire screen.
- “Center Chat Input on Welcome Screen”: When this option is enabled, the chat input bar on the welcome screen of a new chat is not positioned at the bottom center as default, but centered in the middle.
- “Open Thinking Dropdowns by Default”: Some models support the function of displaying their own “thought processes” as natural language text, which are decisive for the output. Large language models do not “think” like we do, but are based on highly complex mathematical calculations. These natural language texts are only intended to help users understand and classify the background of the AI output a little better. These thought process texts are displayed in a dropdown format separately from the actual AI output. If this option is enabled, the texts are opened automatically; otherwise, they are not.
- “Save drafts locally”: If this option is enabled, text that you enter in the chat input bar will automatically be saved locally on the device as drafts. This means that the text will be cached and will remain visible in the input bar even if you switch between chats, reload the page, or even restart the browser.
- „Scroll to the end button": If this option is enabled, a button with a downward-pointing arrow appears above the chat input bar. This button automatically takes you to the end of the chat, so you don't have to scroll down manually.
Settings: Commands
In the command settings, you can enable or disable shortcuts. A shortcut usually refers to a key combination that allows users to execute certain commands or functions more quickly and efficiently. In YoKI, you can enable two such commands:
- "@" command: If this option is enabled, you can mention models using “@” in the chat input bar and switch between them.
- “/” command: If this option is enabled, you can quickly access your predefined prompts using “/”.
You can also switch between models without using shortcuts. This is explained in more detail in the guide “Chat with a model in YoKI”.
Settings: Speech
In the language settings, you can configure the behavior of the “Text-to-speech” and “Speech-to-text” functions.
What are “text-to-speech” (TTS) and “speech-to-text” (STT)?
Both technologies are designed to translate speech or language from one medium to another. TTS processes text-based input into spoken words. STT does the opposite and converts your spoken text into digital text input. These functions give you the option of
- having outputs from the language models read aloud, as well as
- recording your own texts or prompts into your device's microphone and sending them without having to use a keyboard for input.
Accessible use of YoKI through TTS and STT
Both features contribute significantly to accessibility. TTS enables people with visual impairments or literacy difficulties to hear text rather than having to read it themselves. STT helps people with motor impairments, speech disorders, or other physical limitations that make it difficult for them to write or type to send text more efficiently and without errors.
How do I activate TTS and STT?
You can activate or deactivate TTS and STT in the language settings using the slider. Once the functions are activated, you can use them immediately.
- If you want to have the AI outputs read aloud, click on the speaker icon below the message of a language model on the far left. You can stop the computer-generated voice from reading aloud by clicking on the stop icon in the same place.
- If you want to record a text, press the microphone icon at the bottom right of the chat input bar. Your browser may ask you to grant microphone permissions to the website “yoki.urz.uni-heidelberg.de.” Allow the website these permissions in order to use the microphone.
Wie konfiguriere ich TTS und STT?
There is a simple and an advanced language settings window. The simple settings options are sufficient for normal use.
- For “Speech to Text,” please select your input language under the “Language” menu item.
- For “Text to Speech,” please select your desired computer-generated voice from the “Voice” menu item to read aloud the AI outputs. (Note: The selection of voices varies depending on the device and browser.)
Note on data protection

Settings: Account
You can configure your account in the account settings. These include, for example:
- “Display username in messages”: If this option is enabled, the sender's username will be displayed above each of your messages. If this option is disabled, only “You” will be displayed instead of the username.
- “Profile Picture”: You can add a profile picture that will be displayed in chats.
- “Delete account”: Deleting your account will result in all your chats, bookmarks, preferences, etc. being deleted. You will also have to agree to the terms of use again when you next log in. For more information on deleting your account, please refer to the instructions in “Log in and log out in YoKI”.
