ProjectbwGRiD Cluster

Optimized HPC services for researchers and students

The bwGRiD Cluster was a joint project of all state universities in Baden-Württemberg and part of the D-Grid Initiative. Through this project, a regional grid infrastructure bwGRiD was built. The cluster hardware for this infrastructure was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The goal of the project was to focus on the existing knowledge of high performance computing (HPC) in order of be able to offer optimized HPC services to researchers as well as students in Baden-Württemberg. The high performance cluster could be used for large computing demands, such as with extensive modeling. The bwGRiD clusters were in operation starting in 2008. From July 2009, the Heidelberg and Mannheim clusters were coupled into a single cluster with shared user administration. Meanwhile, the bwGRiD cluster has been gradually replaced by the bwUniCluster and the bwForCluster.

At the Heidelberg and Mannheim sites, the bwGRiD infrastructure has since been superseded by the jointly operated bwForCluster MLS&WISO and the bwUniCluster in Karlsruhe, respectively. The work of bwGRiD will continue in a similar form in the project bwHPC-C5.
