14 October 2025 – Collaboration and digital teaching Moodle update with AI: smarter, more modern, more intuitive
On 10 September 2025, Heidelberg University's Moodle platform received a major update to version 4.5. The new version features a fresher design, intelligent AI tools and numerous improvements that make digital teaching and learning more convenient.
Plagiarism detection directly in Moodle
The plagiarism detection software Turnitin Similarity, operated by the University Library, is now integrated into Moodle. Using the new plugin, teachers can check submitted work directly for possible plagiarism.

Integrated AI: YoKI support for teachers
Since the update, Moodle has integrated a YoKI instance that can support teachers in course design. AI assistance can be used, for example, to automatically create texts, adapt learning content or to suggest translations.
Modern design for a better overview
Moodle 4.5 features a clearer interface. Icons and activity cards now appear uniform and transparent, providing a better overview and a more modern look. New activities can now be added directly via a plus symbol in the center of the course without having to move any elements.

New features in the text editor
The revised text editor allows you to scale images directly in the text and, depending on your needs, align them to the right or left. You can also record and embed screen recordings.
More options for quizzes and course design
The quiz function has also been expanded: questions can now be organized by topic and assigned to assessment criteria. New tools are available for course design:
- Batch actions make it easier to edit multiple elements at the same time.
- Sub-sections provide greater structure.
- The new tile format offers a modern and intuitive display.
Easily create certificates of participation
With Moodle 4.5, teachers can issue certificates for completed courses directly – individually designed and downloadable as PDF files. If desired, participation requirements such as scores can be linked automatically. Administrators can also provide templates.
