Managing Director Prof. Dr. Vincent Heuveline
Prof. Dr. Vincent Heuveline is the managing director of the Computing Centre and Chief information Officer (CIO) of Heidelberg University. As a professor, he leads two important research units: The Engineering Mathematics and Computing Lab (EMCL) at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) and the working group "Data Mining and Uncertainty Quantification " at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS gGmbH).

University Responsibilities
As managing director, Prof. Dr. Heuveline, together with the management team, defines the strategic direction of the URZ as the central IT service provider and driver of digitalization in research, teaching, studies and administration. He further develops both the URZ and the IT services, infrastructures and technologies with a focus on the future and heads the service areas Future IT – Research & Education and Smart Campus Solutions. Prof. Dr. Heuveline also supports internationalization and strengthens cooperation with partners in science and research. Additionally, he helps bring IT innovations into university practice and beyond.
As Chief Information Officer (CIO), Prof. Dr. Heuveline oversees the university's overall IT strategy on behalf of the Rectorate and advises the Rectorate on key issues for the future. His focus areas include data sovereignty, digital transformation, artificial intelligence and sustainability. He is also responsible for the strategic direction of information security and coordinates the implementation of relevant measures in collaboration with the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).
Activities on the State and National Level (non-exhaustive)
Prof. Dr. Heuveline is the spokesperson for the steering committee of the bwInfoSec federation, which improves information security at universities and other higher education institutions in the state through consulting, training and information services. He is part of the circle of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) at state universities and is responsible for communication with the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
Since 2022, he has been chair of the ALWR (Task Force of Heads of Scientific Computing Centers in Baden-Württemberg).
Research
His research interests include scientific computing, high-performance and data-intensive computing as well as software development with a particular focus on fields of application in medical technology and energy research. In his teaching, he deals intensively with the topic of IT security - in addition to scientific computing - through dedicated lectures and seminars.
Prof. Dr. Heuveline is a member of program committees of several international conferences on high-performance computing. As an expert and contact person, he advises industry representatives on IT security, AI and the application-related use of data intensive computing.
