A recent upgrade of the exchange servers brings you a redesigned, more convenient web interface for the administration of e-mails, calendars and contacts. Additionally, this upgrade improves the performance of the servers overall.

The web interface for your Exchange-based inbox, formerly known as “Outlook Web Access”, is now called “Outlook on the Web”. It can be accessed, as usual, at: https://exchange.uni-heidelberg.de/

“Outlook on the Web” comes with some helpful new features:

  • A responsive design: “Outlook on the Web” adapts responsively to different screen resolutions and window sizes. This allows it to be used easily on mobile devices and tablets. 
  • Improved Search: The search in “Outlook on the Web” gives recommendations in real time and delivers useful results in seconds. You can now also search other people's calendars as well as your own. . 
  • Diverse comfort and usability features: support for wiping gestures on mobile for managing e-mails, link previews in e-mails, emoji support, and more. 

In addition to the improvements to the web interface that can be seen by you as the end user, the overall performance of the Microsoft Exchange Server has also been optimized. Some security features (such as data loss prevention) have been expanded to better protect your communications and data from unauthorized accessed. 

Exchange: on university servers and accessible to all university employees 

The Microsoft Exchange Server for e-mail and Groupware features are operated by the URZ as an “on premises solution”, i.e. all e-mails and data remain on the university servers. Exchange can be used by all university employees - it is not possible for students to use this service, due to the licensing agreement. Students have access to the web client SOGo, which offers similar basic functions (such as an e-mail inbox, appointment calendar, and contacts).

In many institutions, Exchange has already been implemented as a standard feature or can be set up for your e-mail inbox by request. A designated IT representative can provide information on the use of this feature in your workplace.
