Project KUBERNETES EVALUATION (KUBE 3)

Evaluation of the use of the open source system for automatic management, scaling, and deployment of containerized applications.

Kubernetes is becoming increasingly important as a scalable infrastructure technology. The Kubernetes Evaluation (Kube 3) project advances the development of the cloud infrastructure of the state of Baden‑Württemberg for the production use of Kubernetes. Existing initiatives such as bwGitLab, bwJupyter, and bwCloud are supported in the process.

Together with the partner universities Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Tübingen, a cross‑site Kubernetes testbed will be built to examine how shared service infrastructures can be operated. The focus is on:

  • Integration with federated authentication and authorization infrastructures (AAI)
  • Multi‑tenant capability and information security
  • Deployment models as Kubernetes‑as‑a‑Service (KaaS)
  • Project and resource management on the platform

Through concrete use cases, the cross‑institutional usability and portability of services between the decentralized Kubernetes installations will be investigated. The project is part of a broader, inter‑state initiative that aims to consolidate IT infrastructures and provide highly scalable services—insights gained will subsequently be extended to a larger, inter‑state scenario.

STATUS AND DURATION

The project will run from April 2025 to August 2027.
