You can count on us: The Heidelberg University Computing Centre (URZ)
The Heidelberg University Computing Centre (German abbreviation “URZ”) is your main contact in all matters of IT. As a specialist for IT infrastructure and applications, the URZ provides the university with all kinds of computing services. It maintains a high-efficiency data and telephone network, operates the central university computers and communication servers and supports the complex academic processes with infrastructure services, data protection and software solutions. Our costumers are students, scientists and employees.
Currently, the URZ is headed by Prof. Dr. Vincent Heuveline. It has about 60 salaried employees working in the five divisions ”Appliances”, “Operating”, “Networks”, “Telephony” and “Administration Data Processing”.
The URZ offers a great range of specialized IT know-how: University institutes are supplied with efficient solutions for the operation of their machines and networks. Our portfolio comprises high-performance data storage and a central data backup system as well as software licence proceedings, a central computer firewall, a web content management system, wireless LAN on campus, first and second level support for IT matters and a PC-reparation service.
Students and academics are provided with an email account including an excellent spam filter and a contingent of web space to their personal use. Four public PC-pools with currently 100 workplaces are located in the URZ building. We offer a variety of software courses each semester. Also identity management is part of our competencies: The URZ operates a complex “meta directory” to administrate the great amount of personal data and registration details of the university members.
As an IT expert the URZ stands up for pioneering technologies to support the university research of today and tomorrow. Currently, we take part in a number of future-oriented projects like grid computing, virtual server concepts, high speed data networks and multi-digit terabyte-sized data storage. At the same time, we are always optimizing our data protection and computer security as well as the operation of our machines from the viewpoint of green IT.
Working in cooperation with other universities in Baden-Württemberg and external partners in science and industry, we continually help improving the IT-conditions for our students and researches. A university of excellence needs excellent IT. Thus our motto is: “You can count on us”.
